Minelab has released their new Equinox models, the Equinox 900 (supersedes the Equinox 800) and the Equinox 700 (supersedes the Equinox 600). Below I’ll give a quick breakdown of the significant changes before going through the smaller ones.
Quick breakdown of major changes
- Equinox 900 now has a telescopic carbon shaft that collapses to 61cm
- Improved segmentation of target IDs (119 now vs 49 on the Equinox 800)
- 99 are non-ferrous
- 20 are ferrous
- 5 single frequency option (4/5/10/15/20/40kHz
- Increased sensitivity (28 on the 900 vs 25 on the 800)
- Night mode functionality
- RRP $1699 (Equinox 900) vs RRP $1399 (Equinox 800)
Hardware/design changes
Going into what the changes above mean, Minelab’s ‘night mode’ functionality means this detector now includes a backlight and a vibration setting for haptic feedback. The flashlight is located on the underside of the control box. The vibration setting can change based on the discrimination pattern detected. This gives a sensory alert, so you don’t need to rely solely on auditory cues. The display on the Equinox 900 now has a red backlight mode that does less damage to your overall night vision.
The Equinox 900 is also lighter than the Equinox 800, coupled with a better collapsible design and the change to a carbon shaft, making this detector easier to transport and move with you. Another small but positive change is that the 900 is rated to a waterproof depth range of 5 meters, as opposed to the 800 being rated to only 3 meters.
Software Changes
Most changes for this new model are on the hardware side of things. That said, there is a considerable increase in the range of ID segmentation on the Equinox 900. Going from 49 on the 800 to 119 on the Equinox 900. Simply put, your device is more precise. It’s not detecting ‘more’. You can add segment the metal better based on your target Ids.
