Parks available for drone flying
After mounting pressure due to the massive increase in commercial drone pilots the Brisbane City Council has decided opened up several parks across Brisbane to allow drone flying. The locations are being monitored and will be updated every six months.
At the moment to fly your drone, you need to make sure you meet the following conditions:
- You are flying for recreational purposes; and
- Your aircraft weighs no more than 2kg; and
- Your aircraft is electric; and
- Your aircraft has propeller guards (drones only); and
- You are flying in a manner that does not endanger, interfere with or cause nuisance to the park users or adjoining properties; and
- You follow civil aviation safety authority’s (CASA) safety rules for flying drones and other remotely piloted aircraft recreationally
Currently, all drone flying is regulated by CASA through the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations Part 101. Australia has quite strict drone laws and regulations, and this new initiative is aimed at making drone flying more accessible for drone pilots.
The following is the list of available parks, every park will have signage posted for the fly zones allocated for the parks. We've also included the outline overlaid on a satellite image of each park provided by the Brisbane city council.

The trial began in late December and is set to run for an additional 6 months.
Parks not included in the Trial
According to Brisbane City councils, article individuals can fly drones and other piloted aircraft from any Council Park without Council consent if:
- The drone is a children’s toy, or weighs less than 0.5 kg; or
- The drone weighs less than 0.1kg when flown in Council parks located within 5.5km of the Brisbane Airport or Archerfield Airport*; and
- The drone is being flown for recreational purposes; and
- The drone is being flown in a manner that does not endanger, interfere with or cause nuisance to the park, park users or adjoining properties; and
- The operator follows the Civil Aviation Safety Authority’s (CASA) safety rules for flying drones and other remotely piloted aircraft recreationally.
*CASA requires drones that remotely piloted that weigh more than 0.1kg must not be flown with 5.5km of Brisbane or Archerfield airports.
